Making a Test Webpage

Last Updated: Sep 21, 2026

To build or revise a page without it going live or being indexed, create a test copy first. This covers naming it so search engines and the public never see it, and moving finished work into production.

Step 1: Create the Test Page

Open the Page app, choose Page Add, and name it TEST with Friendly URL TEST (or test1, test2, and so on if TEST is taken). Give the Path a leading "zz" (for example zz-test.php) so it sorts to the end of your page list and stays easy to find. Set Security Groups to Main-Logged In, which restricts viewing to logged-in users and keeps search engines from indexing it.

Step 2: Build the Content

On the PC Content tab, use Load New Layout for a fresh layout, or, if the test page is based on existing content, copy the source code across (Step 3) and edit from there. Set the Template to match the page you are testing against, using the same options where the test mirrors an existing page.

Step 3: Copy Source Code

To move content between pages:

  1. On the source page, click Source in the editor toolbar, select all the code (Ctrl+A), and copy it (Ctrl+C).
  2. On the destination page's PC Content tab, click save a version first, so you can revert if something goes wrong; there is no other undo.
  3. Click Source on the destination page, select all (Ctrl+A), and paste (Ctrl+V).
  4. Scroll down and Save.

Step 4: Check and Promote

Preview the test page at its friendly URL. Once it looks right, use the same Copying Source Code steps to move the finished code from the test page into the real page.
