Shopify · Fulfillment Order Routing

InfiPlex Shopify Location Router: every order to the Location you choose, automatically

Shopify assigns each new fulfillment order from a ranked list of Locations. That works with one warehouse. The InfiPlex™ OMS picks up where that list stops: it moves each Shopify fulfillment order to the Location your rules say, by SKU, by product tag, by which Location actually has stock, or by a priority order you set. It works with Shopify as your only connected channel, and it is included on every InfiPlex plan.

Where the ranked list runs out

Where Shopify Order Routing Stops and InfiPlex Picks Up

Shopify's built-in order routing ranks your Locations and assigns each fulfillment order to the first one that can fill it. For a single warehouse that is all you need. It has no way to say that one SKU always ships from the 3PL while another always ships from your own shelf, that anything tagged drop-ship goes to the supplier, or that orders should fall to a second Location only when the first is out of stock for that item.

Sellers who outgrow the ranked list end up reassigning fulfillment orders by hand in the Shopify admin, order by order, or writing rules into a shipping app that only sees the order after Shopify has already picked the wrong Location. InfiPlex works at the fulfillment order itself. When Shopify creates the fulfillment order, InfiPlex evaluates your rules and moves it to the Location you want before anyone at the warehouse sees it. The technical detail of how Shopify's Fulfillment and FulfillmentOrder objects behave, and how InfiPlex moves the assigned Location, is covered in the Fulfillment Orders and multi-location routing guide.

Set once, applied to every order

How the InfiPlex Location Router Works

Rules are defined once in the OMS, then applied to every fulfillment order Shopify creates, including orders that arrive from a marketplace once you connect one.

  • 1. Connect Shopify

InfiPlex connects as a Shopify Custom App and reads your existing Shopify Locations. Each Location maps to an InfiPlex warehouse, whether that is your own building, a 3PL, or a drop-ship supplier.

  • 2. Define Your Rules

Route by SKU, by product tag, by which Location currently has stock, or by a fixed priority between Locations. Set one Location as the default for anything that does not match a rule.

  • 3. InfiPlex Moves the Fulfillment Order

When Shopify creates a fulfillment order, InfiPlex evaluates the rules and moves it to the Location they name, rather than the one Shopify's ranked list picked.

  • 4. Fulfillment Runs as Normal

Your warehouse, 3PL, or supplier picks and packs from the assigned Location. Tracking flows back to Shopify, and inventory across every Location stays in sync.

The rule types

Routing Rules the InfiPlex Location Router Supports

Rules can be combined, and they evaluate in the order you set. Unmatched orders always land at the default Location, so nothing is left unassigned.

InfiPlex Location Router rule types
Rule What it does Typical use
SKU Sends a specific SKU or list of SKUs to a named Location Bulky items that only the 3PL stocks
Product tag Routes any product carrying a Shopify tag Tag drop-ship items to the supplier Location
Stock by Location Ships from whichever Location has the item in stock, in your priority order Two warehouses carrying overlapping SKUs
Priority order A fixed order of Locations to try In-house first, 3PL second
Default Location Catches anything no rule matched Keeps every order assigned

Who it is for

Fulfillment Setups the InfiPlex Location Router Handles

These are the setups where a ranked Location list is not enough.

  • 3PL and In-House Together

Send some SKUs to the 3PL and keep others on your own shelf, or send everything to the 3PL until it is out of stock and then fall back to in-house. See order management for brands shipping through a 3PL.

  • Stocked and Drop-Ship Mixed

Tag drop-ship products in Shopify and InfiPlex routes them to the supplier Location automatically, while stocked items go to your warehouse.

  • A Second Location Coming Online

Stop manually reassigning orders the day a second warehouse or 3PL goes live. Add the Location, set the rule, and orders start landing there.

  • Shopify-Only Sellers

You do not need a marketplace connected. The Location Router works with Shopify as the only channel, and the same rules carry over when you add one later.

Part of the same system

Where the InfiPlex Location Router Fits

The Location Router is one part of the InfiPlex Shopify integration, not a separate product. Because every plan includes multi-warehouse and drop-ship, the routing rules are available from Basic Starter up.

If you add a marketplace, marketplace orders pull into Shopify and are routed by the same rules. If you move fulfillment to a 3PL, the 3PL's Location becomes one more destination the rules can name; InfiPlex connects to the 3PL's own system through integrations such as Extensiv, ShipHero, VeraCore, and ShipStation. And because InfiPlex tracks inventory per warehouse rather than as a single total, a stock-by-Location rule always reflects what each Location actually has. That per-warehouse model is explained in Multichannel Inventory Sync.

Common questions

InfiPlex Location Router FAQs

What sellers ask before setting up routing rules.

Do I need a marketplace connected to use the Location Router?

No. The Location Router works with Shopify as your only connected channel. Many sellers use InfiPlex first for routing and inventory across two Locations, then connect a marketplace later. When they do, marketplace orders pull into Shopify and are routed by the same rules, with no reconfiguration.

Is the Location Router a paid add-on?

No. Multi-warehouse and drop-ship support is included on every InfiPlex plan, and the routing rules are part of that. Basic Starter at $49.99 a month, month to month, includes it. The only add-on InfiPlex sells is the 3PL Connector, which is a different product built for 3PL operators running client integrations, not something a brand needs for routing.

Can rules use inventory levels, not just SKU?

Yes. A stock-by-Location rule ships from whichever Location has the item available, in the priority order you set. Because InfiPlex keeps inventory per warehouse rather than as one combined number, that check reflects what each Location actually has on hand, and it updates as orders come in and as the warehouse or 3PL reports counts back.

What happens to an order that matches no rule?

It goes to the default Location you set when configuring the router. Nothing is left unassigned, and nothing falls back to Shopify's ranked list unless you choose that Location as your default. You can see which rule, if any, placed each order in the OMS, which makes it easy to spot a SKU that needs its own rule.

Can I split one order across two Locations?

Shopify creates a separate fulfillment order for each Location an order needs, and InfiPlex routes each of those fulfillment orders independently. So an order with one item that only the 3PL stocks and one item that only your warehouse stocks results in two fulfillment orders, each moved to the right place, each with its own tracking sent back to Shopify.
